We often think about our dogs’ physical and emotional health as two separate things. But are they really? Anyone who has lived with a dog knows how strongly emotions can affect them. Excitement can send their whole body into a tail-wagging frenzy. Fear can make them freeze. Anxiety can create restlessness, panting or trembling. Emotions aren’t experienced only in the mind. The body responds too.

Stress can show itself physically

When a dog feels stressed or anxious, their body can become tense and alert. If that state occurs regularly, you may begin to notice changes in posture, movement, sleep or behaviour.

Some dogs may pace or struggle to settle. Others become withdrawn or unusually clingy. You might notice excessive licking, increased sensitivity to touch or tension through certain areas of the body. This is one reason we believe it’s important to look at the whole dog rather than focusing solely on individual symptoms.

Every dog experiences the world differently

What feels completely normal to one dog can be overwhelming to another.
Moving house, introducing another pet, changes within the family, loud noises, travel, unfamiliar environments or even alterations to their daily routine can all affect sensitive dogs. And because our dogs can’t sit us down over coffee and explain what’s bothering them, their behaviour and body language become their vocabulary.
